History of Faculty of Business & Accountancy

Faculty of Business & Accountancy was officially formed on 1st February 1997, with the main objective of providing business and accounting education at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. With the fast pace of economic growth, our country obviously needs more professionally qualified managers to manage the nation's wealth, especially in our quest towards achieving Vision 2020.

History of the Division of Accounting

The courses in Accounting were first introduced in Department of Economics, University of Malaya in 1961. The curriculum was designed mainly for students majoring in Business Administration. The Division of Accounting was established with the Faculty of Economics and Administration in 1966. The beginning was somewhat humble. In the first academic year of its existence, the Division offered only four courses with three staff members.

Beginning with the academic year of 1967/68, the courses were considerably improved and expanded. There was further expansion in courses for the academic year 1968/69 when the Division was offering a total of eleven courses including Taxation and Principles of Auditing.

After lengthy discussions, the courses offered by the Division were accepted as satisfying the Intermediate Examination of the Malaysian Association of Certified Public Accountants in 1968. Graduates from the Division of Accounting were allowed a deduction of articles to three years by the Association. In 1973, a post-graduate Diploma in Accounting Programme was introduced with the aid of the Canadian Government through the provision of faculty from Canada.

Following that, the Division made vital breakthrough with the introduction of the Bachelor of Accounting degree course in 1976/77 with an intake of 34 students. The students were given the option to do this four year course or continue with the three years Accounting course. In 1977/78, the Bachelor of Economics (majoring in Accounting) course was discontinued. Those who decide to major in Accounting will have to do a four year course.
